This excerpt from the Encyclopedia of Ibiza and Formentera recounts the origins ofsome Ibizan hound:
On the Origin of the Ibizan hound are only conjectures, in the absence of concrete evidence that derives from the dogs brought by the Phoenicians from Egypt. This is the hypothesis accepted by most authors and experts. It certainly one of the oldest breeds in the world, which remains well preserved thanks to the endogenous farming, limited by the island. Possibly the Phoenicians imported dogs of breeds of dogscalled Pharaoh, and once on the island, selection, both natural and artificial, these early dogs became what is now known as Ibizan hound. (…) “.
